Guidelines for reasonable service attempts and when to escalate issues.
Our goal is to ensure diligent service efforts while respecting the time and safety of our process servers. The number of attempts you should make depends on several factors, but here are general guidelines to follow:
Standard Expectation: 4 Intentionally Timed Attempts
In most cases, we expect at least four (4) quality attempts before requesting that an address be reviewed for non-service.
To qualify as quality attempts, make sure:
-
They’re made at different times of day (morning, afternoon, evening).
-
You attempt on different days (not all attempts in one day unless instructed).
-
You follow any Special Handling Instructions listed in the job details.
This shows a good faith effort to reach the individual and supports non-service documentation if required in court.
Exceptions:
↩️ When Fewer Attempts May Be Acceptable
Fewer than four attempts may be reasonable in the following cases:
-
Clear Indicators of Vacant/Bad Address
(e.g., property is boarded up, mail piled up, or neighbors confirm nobody lives there) -
Threats to Safety
(e.g., hostile individuals, unsafe property conditions) -
Specific Instructions from ABC Legal
(These will be indicated in the Special Handling or Current Instructions in ABC Mobile)
In all these situation, make sure your observations are clearly reported in ABC Mobile.
❇️ If reported correctly in ABC Mobile, our automation will be able to handle non-serving the address for you without the need for human review.
➡️ If you're unsure whether your situation qualifies, it's always okay to ask for guidance.
🔄 When Additional Attempts May Be Required
Some assignments require extra persistence, especially if:
-
The subject has an irregular or unpredictable schedule
-
There are strict service window limitations (e.g., address is a business with limited open hours)
-
You’ve had signs of occupancy (e.g., lights on, vehicles present) but no answer at the door
-
You confirmed residency on an attempt, but they are actively avoiding service
-
The job involves a high-priority or time-sensitive legal matter, and the customer requests continued effort
➡️ In these cases, continue attempting and make sure to document every visit thoroughly in the app, including time of day, observations, and any interactions.
🔂 Have no fear! ABC Legal will not ask you to make indefinite attempts. If you have made more than six (6) attempts, you may reach out to have the address reviewed.
